BLACK HILLS STATE UNIVERSITY ENGLISH PROFESSOR RECEIVES GRANT TO HOST POETRY WORKSHOP

Dr. Courtney Huse Wika, professor of English at 新万博app_新万博体育-娱乐*官网@ Hills State University, has been awarded a grant from the South Dakota Humanities Council to host a virtual poetry workshop.

The six-week workshop, titled “Spring Sowings,” includes 12 writers who have practiced a new element of craft and received feedback from Dr. Huse Wika each week. The workshop has been taking place since the middle of May and will culminate in a virtual poetry reading that will be free and open to the public June 18 at 5:30 p.m.

Dr. Huse Wika has had several publications of both her critical and creative works, and this year she has had eight poems selected for publication by CALYX, the South Dakota Review, and the Oakwood Journal.

“Poetry is a pillar of humanities. It is pure distillation of human experience, values, and desires, rendering the world anew through figurative language and word play,” said Dr. Huse Wika. “Poetry is a site of personal and communal exploration, and the virtual poetry reading will be both a conclusion of the writers’ studies and also an opportunity to engage a larger audience across the state in a celebration of South Dakota voices and stories.”

Those wishing to attend the virtual reading event can find the Zoom link on South Dakota Humanities Council’s website or on the Facebook event page titled “Spring Sowings: A Virtual Reading by South Dakota Poets.” For more information, email Dr. Huse-Wika at Courtney.HuseWika@BHSU.edu.

This workshop and event are sponsored by BHSU and funded by a grant from the South Dakota Humanities Council, an affiliate program of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The SDHC is a non-profit organization that delivers humanities programming to South Dakota.
